How does the media affect Canadian citizen’s views on immigration and immigrants?

This is a question I’ve been deeply curious about, especially knowing how integral social media and news outlets are to modern society. I’ve decided to come up with two smaller questions of which the answers will hopefully be able to combine to form a bigger picture. This should lend us the answer to the driving question while helping us recognize when the media is twisting our vision.

1. How does the media’s portrayal of immigrants affect recently immigrated citizens in Canada?
2. How can one counteract the negative portrayal of immigrants, particularly with regards to non-Caucasian immigrants?
